Ames City Assessor Wins Prestigious ISAA Award
Shari Plagge, the City Assessor for Ames, has been honored with the 2024 Outstanding Member Award by the Iowa State Association of Assessors (ISAA). This recognition highlights Plagge's exemplary dedication, leadership, and commitment to the organization since joining in 2007. Nominated confidentially by peers, the award underscores her contributions to property valuation excellence. With over 20 years in the field, Plagge’s achievements, including multiple certifications, have made her a standout in Iowa's assessment community.
North Riverside Drive Closure for Sewer and Pavement Work
Starting Monday, Oct. 28, the intersection of North Riverside Drive and North Third Street will close for one week to remove and replace a sanitary sewer manhole. Following this, on Nov. 4, North Riverside Drive from North Second to North Third Street will close for pavement replacement, taking two weeks. The City of Ames has contracted with Con-Struct to manage the project, which includes manhole and curb replacements, driveway apron work, and ADA sidewalk ramp updates.
Carr Park Agility Course Plans Move Forward
The City of Ames will present plans for an agility course at Carr Park to the City Council, seeking approval. The course will feature 15 play components, including cargo nets and balance beams, along with a rubber surface and a concrete border. The project, delayed since 2021 due to rising costs and other priorities, is budgeted at $735,000. A restroom facility was cut from the design to stay within budget. If approved, construction will begin in spring 2025.

No. 9 Kansas Defeats Iowa State 3-1
Iowa State (9-9, 3-4 Big 12) fell to No. 9 Kansas (17-1, 8-0 Big 12) in four sets, 21-25, 15-25, 25-23, 18-25. Despite the loss, the Cyclones fought back to claim the third set after trailing in the match. Amiree Hendricks-Walker led with 11 kills and seven blocks, while Faith DeRonde tallied 12 kills. Freshman Rachel Van Gorp recorded 20 digs and six kills. Iowa State will host Kansas State on Sunday, Oct. 27, with the match televised on ESPN2.
Freyler Named Finalist for William V. Campbell Trophy
Iowa State senior defensive back Beau Freyler has been named a finalist for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, also known as the Academic Heisman. Freyler, a two-time co-captain and 2023 First-Team Academic All-American, was selected from a pool of 204 semifinalists and will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. He will be honored at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in December. Freyler boasts a 3.91 GPA in kinesiology and has recorded 258 career tackles, six interceptions, and 8.0 tackles for loss.
