Two Dairy Cow Events Canceled at Iowa State Fair Due to Bird Flu Concerns
Zayd Hodzic, 4, of Grimes and learns to milk a cow from Iowa State University sophomore Abigail Rogers at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.
Due to bird flu outbreaks in Iowa, the Iowa State Fair has canceled the milking parlor and "I Milked a Cow" experiences for this year's fair, which runs from August 8-18. Marketing Director Mindy Williamson announced that the events, which involve direct contact with dairy cows, pose a risk of spreading the disease. Despite these cancellations, dairy cattle shows will continue, and dairy cows will still appear in the Avenue of Breeds, albeit with additional testing requirements. The Iowa Department of Agriculture will require cows to be tested for the virus no sooner than a week before transportation to the fair.
The bird flu outbreak, which began on May 28 in Sioux County, has affected 13 cattle herds across northwestern Iowa. However, no changes have been recommended for poultry handling at this time.
