#CyclonesVote Campaign Boosts Student Civic Engagement

A voting booth sits empty at Maple Residence Hall on Tuesday Nov. 8, 2022.

Student interns Delaney Graef and Paola Martinez at Iowa State University's Carrie Chapman Catt Center are leading the #CyclonesVote campaign to simplify the voting process for students in Ames.

Their initiative targets low voter turnout among STEM majors and men, highlighting a 24% voting rate among engineering students compared to 65% for those in gender studies. The interns aim to make voting feel less daunting by providing resources like pre-printed registration forms that take only three minutes to fill out.

#CyclonesVote will be tabling on campus until Election Day, with registration available until October 21. Upcoming events include ISU AfterDark on Friday, a Voting Music Concert on October 9, and IPR Politics on the Road on October 17. Follow @cyclonesvote on Instagram for schedules and updates.

Farming Beans After Beans: New Research on Continuous Soybean Planting

In Iowa, farmers traditionally rotate corn and soybeans across three out of four acres, a practice that promotes healthier soil and higher yields. However, with rising demand for soybean oil, especially for renewable diesel, interest in continuous soybean planting is growing. Agronomy expert Sotirios Archontoulis from Iowa State University emphasizes the importance of crop rotation but acknowledges the potential financial benefits of repeated soybean planting, particularly amid fluctuating fertilizer costs.

To explore this possibility, Archontoulis leads a research project testing continuous soybeans with a winter cover crop of cereal rye. Conducted at two Iowa State research farms, the study aims to assess profitability and environmental impacts. Early results show continuous plots performing similarly to rotated plots, but concerns linger about potential long-term yield penalties. Archontoulis notes that understanding the extent of these penalties is crucial for farmers considering this practice.
