Iowa Ranks 2nd in Nation for Cancer Diagnoses

For the third consecutive year, Iowa has the second-highest rate of new cancer diagnoses, according to the Iowa Cancer Registry. An estimated 21,000 new cases are expected this year, with 6,100 Iowans projected to die from cancer. The report also highlights alcohol as a contributing factor, with Iowa ranking fourth in alcohol-related cancers and binge drinking. Young adults aged 25-34 and high-income earners are reported to binge drink more frequently, contributing to rising cancer rates.

Student Model Predicts Trump Win with Narrow Electoral Victory

Iowa State political science students have created a 2024 election forecast model predicting Donald Trump to win with 272 electoral votes, narrowly beating Vice President Kamala Harris, who is projected to earn 262 votes. The students used historical data, polls, and state referendums to make their predictions as part of a class project. Trump is expected to win key swing states like Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. The final prediction will be updated on Oct. 29, ahead of the election.

Story County Republicans Announce Support for 2024 Candidates

The Republican Party of Story County has officially endorsed several candidates running in the November 5, 2024, elections. Leading the lineup is Donald Trump for President, followed by Randy Feenstra for Congress, Kara Warme and Jesse Green for Iowa Senate, and Brett Barker, Shannon Latham, and Chad Behn for Iowa House. The party also supports Stacie Herridge for Story County Recorder.

Story County Democrats Announce Support for 2024 Candidates

The Story County Democratic Party has endorsed several candidates for the upcoming November 5, 2024, elections. The lineup includes Kamala Harris for U.S. President, Ryan Melton for U.S. House District 4, Penny Vossler, Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, Ross Wilburn, and Ryan Condon for Iowa House. Additionally, Margaret Liston, Mike Wolfe, and Cynthia Oppedal Paschen are supported for Iowa Senate. Lucy Martin for Story County Auditor, Latifah Faisal for Story County Supervisor, and Paul Fitzgerald for Story County Sheriff round out the list.

StuGov Passes I V.O.T.E.D. Resolution to Boost Election Day Turnout

Student Government passed the I V.O.T.E.D. resolution to promote voter registration and in-person voting for the Nov. 5 election. Introduced by Sen. Noah Kammeyer, the resolution encourages collaboration with the Carrie Chapman Catt Center to share polling site information. The resolution passed unanimously. Additionally, several students were seated as at-large members of the Sustainability and Health and Wellness committees. The next Senate meeting is on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union Campanile Room.

Cyclones Set for Stanford Intercollegiate

Iowa State heads to Palo Alto for the Stanford Intercollegiate, facing their largest field of the season with 20 teams, including eight top-25 programs. The Cyclones aim to rebound after finishing 11th in their last tournament. This event marks the third time ISU will compete against Big 12 rival Arizona State, with Colorado also joining the field from the conference. The tournament will be held at the renowned Stanford Golf Course, which has hosted numerous prestigious events over the years.

Cyclones Host South Dakota in Second Meet of the Season

Iowa State swimming and diving (1-0) will face South Dakota (1-2) on Friday night at Beyer Pool. The Cyclones hold a perfect 15-0 record against the Coyotes, including a 191-102 victory last season.

In their season opener, Iowa State dominated South Dakota State, winning 14 of 16 events. Senior Carley Caughron led the team with four wins, and Kate Mitchell and Ally Blumenfeld excelled in diving.

The Cyclones will next face Nebraska in their first road meet on October 25.

Campbell Named to Dodd Trophy Midseason Watch List

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell has been named to the 2024 Dodd Trophy midseason watch list. Now in his ninth season, Campbell has led the Cyclones to a 6-0 start, their best since 1938, and a No. 9 ranking in the AP Poll. Campbell recently became ISU's winningest coach with 59 victories, surpassing Dan McCarney.

Iowa State (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) will host UCF on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT on FS1.
