Thanksgiving Holiday Closures in Ames

City of Ames offices, including City Hall and the Ames Public Library, will close on Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29. The Community Center will be closed Thanksgiving Day and open Friday until 5 p.m. The Ames/ISU Ice Arena will host a “Skatesgiving” event on Thanksgiving morning and reopen Friday with regular public skating sessions.

Note that CyRide buses will not operate on Thanksgiving and will run a reduced schedule Nov. 23–Dec. 1. For details, visit www.CityOfAmes.org/prcalendars.

Ames Connect 2050: Community Feedback Sought for Future Transportation Planning

The Ames Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO) is updating its 25-year transportation plan, Ames Connect 2050, and is inviting public input. Residents can attend an open house on Nov. 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ames Public Library or complete an online survey on transportation priorities by Dec. 6. Feedback will help shape future plans addressing safety, mobility, and other transit needs across the Ames metro area.

Gold Star Hall Ceremony at Iowa State to Honor Fallen Students

Iowa State University will hold its annual Gold Star Hall Ceremony at 4:15 p.m. on Nov. 13 in Durham Great Hall, Memorial Union, to honor three former students who lost their lives in military service. The ceremony commemorates Army 1st Lt. Sidney Peterson, Air Force 2nd Lt. Max Harvey Collins, and Air Force Capt. James Wayne Herrick, Jr., with stories of their courage. University leaders and student veterans will speak, alongside performances from an ISU student quartet, ROTC choir, and the Iowa Army National Guard Band.

Ames Veteran’s Day Program to Feature ISU Student and Military Honors

The City of Ames will host its annual Veteran’s Day program at 11 a.m. on Monday at the City Auditorium. Iowa State student and military award recipient Madison Lihs will be the featured speaker. Additional remarks from Ames Patriotic Council President Tim Gartin, Mayor John Haila, and American Legion Post Commander Cliff Barker will open the event. The ceremony will include musical performances by the Heart of Iowa Senior Band and the Ames High Concert Chorale, with accessible seating available.

No. 8 Iowa State Secures 64-42 Win Over Indiana State

No. 8 Iowa State improved to 2-0 with a strong 64-42 victory over Indiana State on Thursday night at Hilton Coliseum. After a 26-26 tie late in the first half, Iowa State pulled away, capitalizing on a series of 3-pointers to close out the half with a 35-28 lead. The Cyclones maintained the advantage in the second half, boosted by solid defense totaling 10 blocks and 10 steals.

Addy Brown recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Audi Crooks led all scorers with 16 points. Sydney Harris also added 11 points, contributing to the Cyclones' impressive shooting effort. Iowa State’s defense held Indiana State at bay, allowing them to cruise to the 22-point win.

Crooks and Ryan Named to Wooden Award Preseason Watch List

Iowa State’s Audi Crooks and Emily Ryan have been named to the 2024-25 John R. Wooden Award Top 50 Preseason Watch List, marking their first appearance on the prestigious list. Crooks, coming off a record-breaking freshman season with 635 points and 258 field goals, started this season strong with 16 points and 50% shooting in the opener. Ryan, the NCAA’s active career assist leader with 788 assists, also holds Iowa State’s all-time assist record. She contributed nine points and a game-high six assists in the Cyclones' season opener.

Iowa State will face Indiana State on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.

Kuearum Advances at ITA Section Championships with Top-30 Win

Iowa State’s Anna Supapitch Kuearum took down No. 27-ranked Cristina Tiglea of Baylor in straight sets at the ITA Section Championships on Thursday, advancing her to the round of 16. Kuearum defeated her Big 12 rival 6-3, 7-6(0), and will now face No. 45 Lily Jones from Michigan on Friday as she pursues a top-six finish and a bid to the NCAA Individual Championships in Waco, Texas.

Iowa State Extends Wrestling Coach Kevin Dresser’s Contract through 2029

After Iowa State wrestling’s standout achievements, including a 2024 Big 12 title and fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, head coach Kevin Dresser has secured a four-year contract extension, keeping him with the Cyclones through June 2029. Athletic Director Jamie Pollard praised Dresser for revitalizing the wrestling program and delivering a competitive edge that resonates with the Cyclone community.

Under Dresser’s leadership, Iowa State has regained national prominence, qualifying at least eight athletes to the NCAA Championships in six of seven years and producing multiple All-Americans. Notably, fan engagement surged in the 2023-24 season, with an average of 6,690 attendees per home dual. The Cyclones open their 2024-25 season at home against No. 20 Stanford on Nov. 8.

Ames High School invites families and students to Future-Ready Family Night on November 14, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Connect with teachers, explore technology tools, and learn about college, career pathways, and post-high school planning.
