Students Rally Against DEI Restrictions
Iowa State students gathered Wednesday morning at Parks Library to protest Senate File 2435 (SF 2435), which reduces funding for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. Chants of “DEI saves lives” echoed as students expressed frustration with the Board of Regents’ decision to approve changes impacting spaces for marginalized groups.
Supporters like Sen. Herman Quirmbach highlighted the University's legal obligations under the Iowa Civil Rights Act and suggested ways to maintain DEI initiatives through student organizations, academic departments, and federal standards.
Protest organizer Silvera Dudenhoefer urged the University and Regents to prioritize student voices, while Ames resident Terry Miles stressed that losing DEI resources could drive down enrollment.
Despite the cold, participants emphasized the need to raise awareness and push for change, advocating collective action to preserve inclusivity on campus.
