North Oak Avenue to Close Intermittently Starting Monday
North Oak Avenue, from Lincoln Way to North Second Street, will experience intermittent closures starting Monday, Dec. 2, due to construction for the Fitch Family Indoor Aquatic Center. The closure, weather permitting, is expected to last one to two weeks.
Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic, and the road will be open when trucks are not entering the construction site.
The Fitch Family Indoor Aquatic Center, located at 115 North Elm Street, will feature a 25-yard, six-lane lap pool, a zero-depth entry pool, a current channel, wellness pool, slide, and party/meeting rooms. The facility will also include two multi-purpose rooms with a walking area
Ames Considers New Ordinance to Allow Social Services in Old Town
The Ames City Council is considering an ordinance to allow social service providers to apply for special use permits in the Old Town District. The ordinance would permit services in areas adjacent to commercial zoning, including the 600 Block of Clark Avenue and the 100-400 Blocks of 7th Street.
Romero House, a local organization that supports individuals facing poverty, has requested to operate from a newly purchased property at 702 Clark Avenue. However, the property does not meet current zoning regulations.
While some Old Town residents are concerned about the potential impact on the neighborhood's character, others support the ordinance, highlighting the need for services for vulnerable populations. The City Council will review the ordinance on Dec. 10 for approval.
