Trout Stocking at Ada Hayden Set for Oct. 31

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will release 2,000 rainbow trout at Ada Hayden Heritage Park Lake in Ames on Oct. 31 around noon. The stocking event is meant to offer local fishing opportunities as an alternative to traveling to northeast Iowa. Anglers must have a fishing license and a trout fee to participate, with a limit of five trout per day. This marks the tenth year of trout stocking at Ada Hayden. At Iowa State’s annual Norman Borlaug lecture, World Food Prize laureates Geoffrey Hawtin and Cary Fowler discussed the urgent need for crop biodiversity to address global food insecurity. With rising population pressures and climate change, they emphasized preserving genetic diversity in crops and adopting innovative farming practices. Hawtin highlighted the role of diversity in crop resilience, while Fowler addressed the link between food insecurity and conflict, advocating for soil conservation and crop adaptation. The lecture underscored the critical role of genetics in sustaining future food supplies.

Hamilton Hall Celebrates 40 Years in Honor of Carl Hamilton

Iowa State University recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of naming Hamilton Hall, honoring Carl Hamilton's lasting influence on journalism and the ISU community. Originally named the "Press Building," it was renamed for Hamilton, an esteemed ISU alumnus and former Vice President for Information and Development. A beloved campus landmark, Hamilton Hall has fostered decades of journalism education and memories, a sentiment shared by journalism professor Michael Bugeja, who called it "a second home."

Cyclone Wrestlers Open Season Ranked No. 6

The Iowa State wrestling team enters the 2024-25 season ranked No. 6 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, marking the program's best preseason ranking since 2009-10. This also extends ISU's streak to 34 consecutive top-10 poll appearances.

Iowa State will face five ranked home dual opponents, starting with No. 21 Stanford on Nov. 8 at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones are set to compete against 12 top-25 teams throughout the season, including No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 18 Arizona State.

Tamin Lipsey Named to NABC Player of the Year Watch List

Iowa State's junior point guard Tamin Lipsey has earned a spot on the NABC National Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, marking him as one of five Big 12 players on the 20-player list. This follows his inclusion on the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year and Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Watch Lists.

A returning AP Honorable Mention All-American, Lipsey led the Cyclones to a Big 12 Championship last season, averaging 12.4 points, 4.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 steals. Along with multiple All-Big 12 honors, Lipsey set a school record with a 34-game steal streak and has a steal in 66 of his 69 career games.

Milan Momcilovic Named to Julius Erving Award Watch List

Iowa State sophomore forward Milan Momcilovic has been selected for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Watch List, honoring the top small forwards in Division I basketball. Momcilovic, one of five Big 12 players on the 20-member list, had a standout freshman season, starting all 37 games and averaging 10.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists. He earned Big 12 All-Freshman and Big 12 Championship All-Tournament honors after contributing 18 points in the Cyclones’ title win over No. 1 Houston.

Fan voting for the Erving Award opens November 1, with the winner set to be announced during the 2025 season.

Cyclones Call for Gold in Season-Opening Dual Against Stanford

Iowa State is gearing up for an electric start to the wrestling season, as fans are encouraged to wear gold for the Cyclones’ first home dual against Stanford on Friday, Nov. 8. This highly anticipated matchup is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum, where Iowa State will look to make a strong opening statement on their home turf.

Ames High Junior Advances to State Championship Finals

Congratulations to Logan Till, an Ames High junior who ranked among the top 10 at the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association (ISDTA) State solo qualifiers last Friday. Logan will now compete in the State Championship finals at Wells Fargo Arena on December 6. Way to go, Logan!

Northwood Preschool Celebrates New Inclusive Playground

Students at Northwood Preschool in Ames recently celebrated their new inclusive playground, an initiative inspired by the preschoolers themselves. After noticing a classmate with mobility challenges couldn’t access the original playground, students and staff envisioned a space everyone could enjoy. They presented their ideas to the school board and local businesses, gaining support for the project. Now, students with wheelchairs and walkers can independently explore the playground, fostering inclusivity across the preschool.
